20th & 21st June.....Rocky Mountain High....

Time for a John Denver moment...Rocky Mountain High, love that song and this area....as I said in the last post we are surrounded by great views of the snow capped mountains, meadows and of course the "hummers"
Wednesday 20th June...
The hummingbirds are still keeping us enthralled....

Frosty overnight but will warm up during the day, we are at 9000ft elevation....
Wally is working today so we head out with Carole on one of the many ATV trails which will take us from 9000ft to about 10,500ft, it did get a bit chilly but we had dressed for cool temps....
This section of the trail is not far from the RV park and gets much worse with huge boulders a little farther up the track....Carole's ATV is made for this type of terrain but we have seen SUVs heading this way and the Sheriff in his company car....we certainly wouldn't bring our truck up here !!!!
One of the great views from the trails....amazed at how many folks are camping up here, for hiking, ATVing or fishing...dry camping in tents, pop up campers and big rigs such as ours !!!!
I might of mentioned in an earlier post that all of the Lodge Pole Pines are either dead or dying from an attack of " pine beetles"...the beetles lay their lava under the bark, that introduces a fungus that stops the tree from obtaining water and dies....every 50 years or so it spreads down from western Canada right through the Rockies....
Carole and I in her trusty ATV....
Yorkieman enjoying the ride...
The trail back down to the RV Park...it's been a great couple of hours exploring the mountains, sadly no sightings of moose or elk but we did see a yellow bellied marmot....
Time this afternoon for Yorkieman and I to have a good walk around the RV park and surrounding area....to the right of this lake is actually quite a big estate or sub division as they call them in the US.....
One of the old "artefacts" at the office & welcome area of the RV park.....
A very good day rounded off by the evening games of Fastrack a great card strategy game that we enjoyed playing with C & W and new camping buddies, Dean and Diane.......
Thursday 21st June...
Our rides for today !!!
Polaris Slingshots (technically a motorbike) with a 4 cylinder Chevrolet engine....they even have a back up camera and cruise control !!!!
This and next pic some of the pretty "spring" flowers seen as we head into the Rocky Mountain National Park and the drive up to the Alpine visitor centre at 11,796ft.....
Switchbacks and great scenery on the drive up.....we have driven this road over from Estes when we visited RMNP a few years ago...it was earlier in the year and a lot more snow !!
Still lots of pockets of snow at Alpine...
Photo taken on telephoto.....the unpaved Old Falls River Road runs through this area, only open from July through September....
Back down and Kawuneeche or  now known as Coyote Valley and the Colorado River on the Continental Divide....
Had hoped for more sighting of elk and moose but at least we did see one elk....
Yorkieman and Wally at the pull out where we saw the elk (previous pic)
This and next pic Carole and I....

Looking at this photo makes you realise that your backside is very close to the road !!!!
Old vehicles at the Historic Grand Lake Lodge.....
The view of Grand Lake from the lodge...sorry no pic but usual log cabin type building...
Camp staff (we are included) Pot Luck Supper this evening, great food and company, a lot of RVers especially full timers work at the camps to help pay for their "rent".....Fastrack to round of a fantastic day...
We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here at Winding River RV Park, Grand Lake and RMNP..

We can thoroughly understand why folks come back here year after year....
Tomorrow we head across the Rockies and down to Pueblo, CO....
Until the next post and I promise to do a bit of catch up....
A very contented Yorkieman and Mrs Blogger....

17th to 19th June.....Beautiful Grand Lake, Colorado....

Still on catch up with blog...ha ha having too much fun !!!
We set out on a wet Sunday morning from Craig to Grand Lake....
At first following the Yampa River and railroad along the US40 through Steamboat Springs before heading up into the Rockies Mountains and through Rabbits Ears Pass at 9426ft elevation....raining so no good photos to post but still remnants of snow.....
Rabbits Ears Pass now has just one ear due to a large rock fall !!!
Despite the rain and driving conditions it was an interesting drive with a sighting of a bald eagle and lots of the alpine sunflowers and lupins...
The small town of Kremmling.....
Stunning Bryers Canyon....
What with all of the stunning scenery of the Rockies we hadn't expected yet another deep canyon on this journey...
Bryers Canyon....The Colorado River and railroad, sadly no train.....
A comfort stop at pullout on the last leg of todays journey on US34 north at Lake Granby.....temps have plummeted and Yorkieman is cold and we are not liking those black clouds but hey ho !!!
Good spot Yorkieman but we are not sure if Golden Eagle or Osprey but majestic anyway....
We arrive at our home for the next 5 days at Winding River RV Resort, elevation 9,000ft a bit travel sore but the rain has stopped and we have a great reunion with our friends Carole and Wally and a great catch up over supper at their place....
Monday 18thJune...
Another day another dollar as they say, the sun is shinning and we are fascinated and entertained by the hummingbirds.....we will spend hours watching them over the next few days...
C & W loan us a feeder to watch these incredible birds....
As with most wildlife there is a pecking order and at times there is a feeding frenzy...I do have video but haven't been able to upload...I will if I have time work on that....
We are staying at Grand Lake which is the western side of The Rocky Mountain National Park, big on ATV, lake pursuits and horse riding in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter....
This is the  Grand Lake Library...I could so work here....
Hmmm...the guy on the roof does not have a safety line...seems they are going to lift up part of the roof !!!!
Lake Granby....
This young guy was born only 2 months ago but is almost as tall as his mother....Colorado is very much horse country....
Late evening and the elk come down into the meadow to graze....
We are very settled and as Carole has said whichever way you look is a great view, there are no bad views....we are surrounded by mountains and clean air....
Until the next post...

15th & 16th June Flaming Gorge, Red Canyon Overlook Utah...

As I mentioned in the last post we had planned a day off today but on great advise from our friend Bill we head to Flaming Gorge Dam & Visitor Centre...
Our route was US191 a scenic mountain route that many travellers take to Wyoming and Yellowstone NP but we  just travel the 60 miles to the dam...
From the dam we go further north to the spectacular Red Canyon overlook...
Stunning views looking down 1700 ft to the surface of the Green River...
Even though at 7,720ft elevation it's incredibly hot....no complaints !!
Would have loved to do a boat trip through the gorge....
We had a lovely chat with the two state park volunteers in the visitors centre then had our lunch sandwich overlooking the gorge...doesn't get much better..
Back down to Jensen and some housekeeping....fuelled up our truck for the road tomorrow and a top up of grocery supplies then back home to the clouds forming and the wind increasing and thinking hey ho but not a repeat of yesterday...maybe this little sapling will have the strength of the early settlers....
16th June...
Some rain overnight, this area is suffering from a lack of winter snow and spring/summer rain...

Todays journey is quite a short one at 112 miles and not a lot to report on the blog....we did see antelope and deer and happily not roadkill as we have seen over the past week.....
We crossed over into Colorado at Dinosaur just 20 miles from Jensen but missed getting a photo of the welcome to CO sign !!!!
We did pass through the town of Maybel (elevation 5900ft) whose slogan is "Where the West is Still Wild"
Craig Colorado for an overnight stop....
The sunset rainbow after a short shower...
Tomorrow we head up through the Rockies to Grand Lake...
Until the next post....

13th-14th June..The Great Salt Lake....Heber City to Jensen, Utah...

After a nice drive through the mountains on I-80 but slightly stressy around Salt lake City we arrived at The Salt lake State Park Marina ready for our coffee and cookie !!!
As ever they have a very good visitors centre and staff, loads of info and a really good video on a loop of the history of The Great Salt Lake including myths and legends, one being their very own "Nessy"
Rather hazy today, maybe as it was chilly overnight but already high 80's....
It was interesting to discover that there are several islands in the lake and most at some time used for ranching by the early settlers....
It is the largest lake west of the Mississippi River and also one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth.....
In the mid 1800s this area was Black Rock Resort with bathhouses, a brewery and boardwalk all long gone...
Part of the canal for the main salt mine....
Interesting history to this building...this is the Saltair Concert Venue...
In 1893 the first Saltair was built as a recreational bathing resort, by 1920 drawing a half a million visitors a year....it burnt down in 1925 and was replaced by Saltair 2 in 1926 but was plagued by economic downturn, drought fire and flood and Saltair 3 was built in the early 1980s but just a few months after completion the lake level rose and the facility was severely flooded...in 1993 it reopened as a concert venue and so far so good !!!!
Opposite the Salt Lake is the refinery for the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine...the open-pit mine, the largest man made excavation in the world, is in the Oquirrh Mountains 26 miles from here...
The ore is made into a "sludge" that is piped to the refinery...
And back home to Heber City and farewells to our fellow Cedar Creek owners.....
Thursday 14th June and time to move east on the US40 to Jensen, Utah...
Sorry can't remember quite where this is but nice lake...
Coming down from the Wasatch Mountain Range (8020ft)
Sadly lots of roadkill, deer and elk....
From alpine scenery to red rocks in 100 miles !!!
The intrepid travellers arrived at our home for the next 2 nights at Outlaw Trail RV Park in Jensen and ready to relax when clouds gather then suddenly the wind gets up and we have a mini type tornado.....rather scary and speaking to the lovely RV Park owner she was scared too !!!!
The temperature dropped from 94F to 79 but within a short time after the "storm" back up to 87F and blue sky again...
We had planned a day off tomorrow but learn there is quite a bit to see in this area...
For now until the next post..
Bye for now..
The Slightly Shaken but Not Stirred Campers....

This Chapter Closes.....August 2018.....

Camp Harris at Crooked Creek RV Park... Our 5th stay and Kathy has given us a great site overlooking the lake... Lake Keowee...and the...
